Crow River Station, renamed for a railroad man
James Lyle claimed the first land here on June 15, 1855. The railroad reached the site on October 8, 1868, and the town that grew up around the depot was called Crow River Station, a name the residents did not care for. It was renamed for Francis Roach Delano, superintendent of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, and the legislature made it official in 1870. The village incorporated on February 11, 1876.
Delano has been running a Fourth of July celebration since 1857, which is nineteen years older than the city itself and the oldest in the state.
An old core, and a real one
Three buildings here are on the National Register: the Delano Village Hall, built in 1888, the Eagle Newspaper Office, three adjoining commercial buildings put up between 1883 and 1885, and the Simon Weldele House on River Street, built in 1893.
Work on a house of that era is about matching what is already there. Original trim reveals, existing roof profiles, and flashing details that were shaped on site by hand. A contractor who prices an 1890s house the same way he prices a 2005 rambler has looked at one of them too quickly, and it shows in the finished elevation.
The newer edges are a different quote
Delano ran about 1,386 people in 1950 and 3,836 by 2000. It reached 5,464 by 2010 and 6,484 by 2020. The subdivisions from that second wave sit out from the center, and a re-roof there is usually a straightforward like-for-like replacement or a storm repair. We quote both kinds of house, and the scope reads differently for each.
The river runs through the middle of town
The South Fork of the Crow River runs right through downtown Delano, with Central Park, River Front Park and Riverside Park along it. Lots close to the river carry heavier tree cover, and shaded roofs hold moisture, collect leaf litter in the valleys, and streak with algae years before an open-lot roof does. It does not read as a leak. It takes life off the shingles quietly, and it is worth knowing before you choose between a repair and a replacement.
