The town is named after a racehorse owner
Traders set up at the meeting of the Credit and Minnesota rivers in 1852, and Irish and Scottish settlers built what they called Hamilton Landing after Hamilton, Ontario. It incorporated as the village of Hamilton in 1892.
In 1902 the Minneapolis businessman Marion Willis Savage bought the pacer Dan Patch and trained him on his stock farm along the south side of the Minnesota River here. The horse became famous enough that the town renamed itself Savage in 1904. Dan Patch set a world pacing-mile record at the 1906 State Fair that stood for fifty-four years.
Bluffs, a fen, and real elevation change
Savage is not flat. The Savage Fen sits at the base of north-facing bluffs that run about a hundred feet, separated from the river valley by Highway 13, with the industrial ground low along the river and the residential neighborhoods up on higher land to the south.
Houses up on the bluff line take wind that the low ground does not. On those roofs we fasten with six-nail patterns and high-wind-rated shingles rather than the four-nail minimum, and we pay attention to the rake and eave edges, which is where an exposed roof usually starts to lift.
Twenty-five years of building, all at once
Savage had 3,954 people in 1980. It hit 9,606 by 1990, 21,115 by 2000, and 32,465 by 2020. It went from a river town to a full suburb inside one working lifetime.
The upside of that for a homeowner is that the roofs are predictable. The downside is that a lot of them were built fast, in a hot market, and the details that get skipped when crews are stretched are the ones that fail first. When we are up there we look at the valley detail, the step flashing at wall transitions, the pipe boots and the attic ventilation rather than pricing shingles alone.
Storm damage and the claim after it
Scott County takes its share of the hail and wind that crosses the south metro. Bruising is easy to miss from the ground on a roof that still looks respectable from the street, and that is the case where an undocumented claim gets denied.
