An Irish name and a German one, in the same word
Irish and German families settled this rolling ground west of the Mississippi after the 1851 treaty, and the name they ended up with carries both: Inver from an Irish fishing village, Grove for the German settlers' homeland. The township incorporated in April 1858, and by 1880 it held 240 farms, four churches and four school districts.
The Chicago Great Western Railroad came through near the river in 1886 and a village grew around it, incorporating separately in 1909. The two did not become one city until March 9, 1965. Salem Methodist and Emanuel Lutheran both date to 1854 and St. Patrick to 1856.
Roofs from the postwar build-out
The population ran 1,887 in 1940, 6,266 in 1960 and 12,148 in 1970, reaching 33,880 by 2010 and 35,801 by 2020. The heaviest building years were the 1960s through the 1990s, and growth has been modest since.
On a house of that age the shingles are usually the least interesting thing we find. How many coverings have gone on, whether the decking was ever replaced, whether anyone ever corrected the attic ventilation, and whether the original step flashing at the wall transitions is still sound all matter more to what the job costs. The river, the bluffs and the swing bridge
The Mississippi forms the eastern edge of the city, which runs about thirty square miles nine miles southeast of St. Paul. The Rock Island Swing Bridge, built in 1894 and closed to traffic in 1999, still stands over the water and gets lit at night in summer.
Ground near the bluffs carries mature tree cover and takes wind off the river valley. Shaded roofs there hold moisture, collect leaf litter in the valleys and streak with algae sooner, while the exposed elevations take wind-driven rain behind the siding. We look at the gutters, the fascia and the exposed walls when we quote a reroof rather than treating them as a separate trip.
Ice dams on a fifty-year-old attic
Houses built here in the 1960s and 1970s were insulated and vented to the standard of their day. Warm attic air melts snow high on the roof, the water refreezes at the cold eave, and it backs up under the shingles.
Air seal the attic bypasses, balance intake and exhaust ventilation, and carry ice and water shield far enough up from the eave and through the valleys. That is the repair that holds. Heat cable manages the symptom and leaves the cause. If the roof is coming off anyway, that is the moment to do it.

On an older roof, hail damage and ordinary wear look alike from the ground and an adjuster treats them very differently, so the documentation is what decides the claim.
