The county seat, and the fight over it
Cambridge was established in 1866 and incorporated in 1877, founded and named by New England settlers. It became the seat of Isanti County after a contested election in 1869, and the brick courthouse built in 1888 still stands as a private office building. It went on the National Register in 1980.
The city also has the highest share of Swedish Americans of any American city over five thousand people, which is a strange thing to be true of a town named by New Englanders.
Two housing generations, forty years apart
Cambridge had 1,790 people in 1950 and 5,520 in 2000. Then it went to 8,111 by 2010, a jump of nearly forty-seven percent in one decade, and 9,611 by 2020.
So there are two distinct jobs in this city. The older homes near the downtown core and the former state hospital grounds carry early-1900s detailing and are more likely to turn up decking that needs replacing once the shingles come off. The subdivisions from the 2000s growth are usually a like-for-like replacement or a storm repair. We walk the roof before we write the scope, on both kinds.
The Rum River, and the ground it cuts through
The Rum River runs north to south straight through the middle of Cambridge, and the city sits at the junction of Highways 65 and 95 across about eight square miles. Isanti County is hilly ground dotted with lakes and ponds rather than flat prairie.
Roofs on the wooded river lots hold moisture longer and collect needles and leaf litter in the valleys. Roofs on the open ground outside town take the wind instead. We fasten exposed roofs with six-nail patterns and high-wind-rated shingles rather than the four-nail minimum, because a wind rating only describes a roof that was actually nailed that way.
