How big is a square in roofing?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. How pitch, overhangs and waste change the count, and how to check the number on your estimate.
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface, which is a patch ten feet by ten feet. A roof written up as 24 squares has about 2,400 square feet of surface to cover. That unit runs through the whole job: the estimate, the material order, the disposal, and the insurance scope if a storm is involved. What it measures is the roof itself, not the floor area of the house underneath it, and that difference is where most of the confusion starts.
Why the trade counts in squares
Because the materials are packaged to it. Standard asphalt shingles come three bundles to the square, each bundle covering about 33 square feet. Heavier designer shingles are thicker and cover less per bundle, so they run four or five bundles to the square. A roll of synthetic underlayment covers around 10 squares. A roll of #15 felt covers about 4. Ice-and-water membrane usually comes in rolls of about 2 squares.
Weight follows the same unit, and it matters more than people expect. A square of architectural shingles weighs somewhere around 200 to 240 pounds, three-tab a little less. A 24-square tear-off with one layer of shingles on it puts more than two and a half tons of debris in the driveway. If there is a second layer under the first, double it. The square count sizes the dumpster and sets the disposal line, well before anyone picks a shingle.
Your home’s square footage is not your roof’s
This is the mistake almost everyone makes on the first try. A 2,000 square foot two-story house and a 2,000 square foot rambler need very different amounts of roofing.
Put a simple gable on both, one-foot overhangs, a 6/12 pitch. The two-story sits on roughly a 1,000 square foot footprint, so the roof covers about 1,130 square feet in plan, and the pitch brings that to about 1,270 square feet of surface. Call it 13 squares. The rambler puts all 2,000 square feet on one level, so the roof covers about 2,180 square feet in plan and roughly 2,440 with the pitch. Closer to 25 squares. Same size house on paper, nearly twice the roof.
Anything that starts from your listed living area, including most instant online estimators, is doing the arithmetic wrong before it begins.
Pitch adds surface you cannot see from the ground
Pitch is written as rise over a 12-inch run. A 6/12 roof climbs six inches for every foot it runs horizontally. The sloped surface is always larger than the flat shadow it casts, and the ratio between the two is fixed geometry: the square root of the rise squared plus 144, divided by 12.

So a roof measuring 1,800 square feet in plan at an 8/12 pitch has about 2,160 square feet of actual surface, which is near enough 22 squares.
Two things trip up the plan measurement itself. Measure out to the edge of the overhangs, not to the wall line, because the roof extends past the walls on every side. And measure each roof section on its own if the pitches differ. Attached garages, porch roofs and dormers are often flatter than the main house, and averaging them together quietly loses or invents area.
Waste is why the order is bigger than the roof
Shingles get cut to fit, and the offcuts go in the dumpster. A simple gable with two long uninterrupted runs usually carries about 10 percent waste. A cut-up roof with hips, valleys and dormers can take 15 percent or more, because every hip and every valley means angled cuts along the full length of the intersection. Materials then get rounded up to whole bundles on top of that.
A 24-square roof can be a 27-square order. Both numbers are right and they answer different questions. It is worth asking which one a quote is built on, because a proposal priced on measured squares and one priced on ordered squares do not compare at a glance.
What a square does not cover
A square is a unit of area, and a good deal of a roof is not area. Ridge cap, starter course, drip edge, valley metal and step flashing are measured in linear feet. Vents, pipe boots and skylight flashings are counted one by one. Deck repair is priced per sheet of sheathing, and nobody knows how many sheets are bad until the old roof is off.
Two estimates with the same square count can still be a long way apart, and the difference is usually sitting in these lines rather than in the shingle. Anyone quoting roofing work should be able to show you the measurement the number came from and how the linear and per-item lines were counted.
Squares on a storm claim
In hail and wind country, and the Twin Cities metro from Blaine and Ham Lake down through Minneapolis and St. Paul is hail country, a roof usually gets measured twice: once by the contractor and once for the carrier. Insurance estimates use the same unit under a short code. Roofing quantities appear as SQ, one SQ being 100 square feet, with LF for the linear items and EA for the individual ones.
When the two square counts disagree, sort it out before the tear-off rather than after. Ask for the measurement diagram behind each number. A real one shows every roof facet separately with its own pitch and area, and two honest measurements of the same roof should land within a fraction of a square of each other. A gap larger than that normally means someone missed a facet, used the wrong pitch, or measured to the wall line instead of the eave.
One line worth finding on any Minnesota roof: the ice barrier. State code calls for a membrane running from the lowest edge of the roof to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line, and on roofs of 8/12 and steeper it also has to reach at least 36 inches measured up the slope from the eave. That membrane is sold by the square as well, and on a house with deep overhangs or a low pitch it can add up to several squares. It does not stop an ice dam forming. It stops the water backing up behind one from getting into the wall, which is a different problem with a different fix.
The same unit shows up on the rest of the exterior
Siding is quoted by the square too, and it is the same 100 square feet. If you are pricing a whole exterior at once, the wall squares and the roof squares are separate counts and belong on separate lines. Wall area is taken off the elevations rather than the footprint, and whether window and door openings get deducted varies from one estimator to the next, which is one of several things worth asking a siding proposal to state plainly.
Checking the number on your estimate
If you have a roofing estimate in front of you, three questions settle whether the square count is sound. Ask for the measurement diagram and check that it breaks the roof into facets with pitches. Ask whether the squares quoted are measured or ordered. Then compare the pitch on the diagram against the roof you can see from the street, because a 4/12 written up as an 8/12 moves the total by about 14 percent.
If those three line up, the square count is real and the rest of the estimate is worth comparing line by line. If nobody can produce the diagram, that is the thing to fix before signing anything.
