Hail Damage to Siding: How to Tell, and What an Adjuster Looks For
Siding damage from hail is easy to miss even when a roof claim is obvious. Here's how to check each elevation, what damage looks like by material, and how an adjuster reads it.
A roof usually announces hail damage on its own: granules in the gutters, a contractor pointing out bruised shingles from a ladder. Siding rarely announces anything. The same storm that puts obvious hits on a roof can leave siding damage that only shows up when you stand at the right distance, at the right time of day, looking at the wall from the right angle. Whether that damage gets covered is a separate question from whether it exists, and the two get confused constantly. This is about finding it first.
Why siding damage gets missed
Roof damage sits on a surface that faces the sky, so hail hits it close to straight on and the impact marks read clearly from almost any angle once you know to look. Siding is vertical. Hail coming in at an angle, which is most hail once wind is involved, grazes a wall rather than striking it square, and a graze mark under flat daylight can be almost invisible. Stand at the base of the same wall in early morning or evening light, when the sun is low and raking sideways across the surface, and the same marks throw shadows that make them obvious. That is not a trick, it is just how low-angle light works on any dented or cracked surface, and it is the single most useful thing to do before writing off a wall as undamaged. Walk the full length of every elevation this way, not just the side facing the street.
What the damage looks like, by material
Vinyl siding cracks, chips, and punches clean holes rather than denting, because it does not flex and rebound the way metal does. What matters more than the impact itself is temperature at the time of the storm. Vinyl gets noticeably more brittle as it gets cold, so a hailstorm in late spring or fall, when the panel is already stiff from a cool morning, tends to crack panels that the identical hail would only mark in the middle of a warm July afternoon. That is a real, physical difference in how the material fails, not a coverage rule, and it is why a shoulder-season storm is often worse for vinyl than its hail size alone would suggest.
Aluminum and steel siding dents instead of cracking. Most dents are cosmetic: the panel still sheds water and the finish is intact, so the damage is appearance only. Not always, though. A hard enough hit can crack or chip the factory paint at the point of impact, and once that finish is broken the exposed metal is open to corrosion going forward, which turns a cosmetic dent into a slow-developing one. The distinction an inspector is making is whether the finish itself is broken, not just whether there is a dent you can feel with a hand.
Fiber cement chips and cracks rather than denting or punching through. The problem is not the chip itself, it is what the chip exposes. Fiber cement is manufactured to resist water at its factory-finished face; once that face is chipped away, the substrate underneath is exposed at exactly the kind of small, easy-to-miss point where water gets in and keeps getting in every time it rains. That makes fiber cement damage a durability problem more than a cosmetic one, even when the chip itself looks minor from the ground.
Read the wall the way the storm hit it
Hail does not fall straight down once wind moves it, and a real storm usually has a dominant direction. That means one side of a house can take a real beating while the opposite side, sheltered by the angle of the wind or by the house itself, shows almost nothing. That pattern is not a reason to doubt the claim; it is exactly what a directional storm looks like, and it is one of the things an adjuster is trained to expect and check for. Inspect and document each elevation on its own rather than treating “the siding” as one surface. If the west wall is marked up and the east wall is clean, that is evidence the damage is consistent with the storm, not a red flag that something does not add up.
The evidence that shows up before the siding does
Soft metal around a property dents far more readily than most siding, which makes it some of the first evidence an adjuster looks at, whether or not the siding itself shows visible damage yet. Gutters and downspouts, fascia wrap, the metal wrap around window and door trim, the fins on an AC condenser, mailboxes, and grills all mark up under hail that a stiffer siding panel might absorb without a visible mark. A wall of dented gutter and consistently dinged condenser fins, on the same elevation that took the storm, is corroborating evidence even where the siding reading is ambiguous. It is worth checking these specifically and photographing them alongside the siding itself, not as an afterthought.
Matching is the part that turns physical into a coverage question
Even where siding damage is clearly hail-caused, repairing only the damaged panels is not always possible in a way that looks right. Siding colors and profiles get discontinued, and a manufacturer may no longer produce the exact shade or panel style installed on the house. Patch in a close-but-not-identical replacement and the repaired section is visible against the original, sometimes only in certain light, sometimes from the street. Whether a carrier will pay to replace an entire elevation, or the whole house, to keep the finish uniform rather than patch a mismatched section is a policy and adjuster question, not a physical one, and it is one of the more commonly contested points in a hail claim. It is worth raising directly rather than assuming a partial repair will be offered or refused.
Whether siding rides with the roof claim
There is no single answer to whether hail-damaged siding is covered on the same claim as a hail-damaged roof. It depends on the specific policy and on how the adjuster scopes the loss, and both of those vary by carrier, by state, and by the individual adjuster assigned. What is consistent is that siding does not get evaluated automatically just because the roof does. If an adjuster is on site primarily to look at the roof, ask directly that the siding be inspected and documented as part of the same visit, elevation by elevation, rather than assuming it is already included. Whether the finding results in coverage is a decision the policy and the adjuster make, and the reader’s own carrier is the only source that can say what a specific policy actually pays.
Document before anything gets repaired
Photograph every elevation before any repair work starts, including the sides that look clean, since a clean elevation is itself part of the directional evidence. Take wide shots of the whole wall and close shots of individual impact marks, in the low-angle light that shows them best, with a date attached. Do the same for the soft metal evidence: gutters, downspouts, trim wrap, the condenser. Once repairs begin, especially anything involving removal or repainting, that evidence is gone. A documented record made before work starts is what lets an adjuster, or a second opinion, evaluate the claim after the fact instead of relying on memory.
If the roof gets approved and the siding does not
A partial approval, where a roof claim moves forward and siding is denied or left out of scope, is not necessarily the final word. It is worth asking the adjuster directly what the siding decision was based on: whether it was inspected specifically, and by what standard. If the documentation supports damage that was not part of that inspection, most carriers have a process for a supplement or a re-inspection, and a written scope showing elevation-by-elevation damage and the soft metal evidence around it is what makes that request specific instead of a general disagreement. This is a conversation with the carrier, not something a contractor can resolve directly.
