The Parts of a Roof, Explained

A plain-language walkthrough of every part of a roof, from sheathing and rafters to flashing, the ridge vent and the ridge cap, so you can read an estimate and know what you're paying for.

A roof is not one material draped over your house. It is a stack of specific parts, each with one job, and a roofing estimate is really just a list of those parts and what happens to each one. Sheathing gives everything a surface to fasten to. Rafters or trusses hold the shape. Underlayment and an ice barrier keep water out before the shingles ever go down. Flashing seals every place the roof meets something that is not more roof. Once you know what these parts are, you can read any estimate, on your own roof or someone else’s, and see exactly what you are paying for.

What is roof sheathing, and why does everything fasten to it?

Sheathing, also called the deck, is the solid layer nailed across the rafters or trusses that gives the roof its shape and its strength. On most homes built or reroofed in the last few decades that layer is plywood or OSB, oriented strand board; older homes sometimes still have solid wood plank decking underneath. Every other layer, underlayment, ice barrier, shingles, flashing, is fastened to this surface, so its condition sets a ceiling on how well anything above it can perform. A roofer who finds soft or delaminated sheathing during a tear-off has to replace it before shingles go back on, because nailing shingles into rotten wood does not hold. What are rafters and trusses, and why shouldn’t they be cut into?

Rafters are the individual angled boards that run from the ridge down to the exterior walls, and trusses are pre-built triangular frames that do the same job as one manufactured unit. Both carry the entire weight of the roof, plus snow load in a Minnesota winter, down into the walls of the house. That is why cutting, notching or drilling through a rafter or a truss chord to route a vent, a skylight or a duct is not a small decision. Each member is sized for the load it carries, and removing material without adding support can weaken the whole structure in a way that does not show up until the next heavy snow.

What do the eave, rake, ridge and hip mean on a roof?

These four words describe the lines a roof forms, not materials. The eave is the horizontal lower edge that overhangs the wall. The rake is the sloped edge that runs up a gable end. The ridge is the horizontal line at the very top where two slopes meet. The hip is the sloped line where two roof planes meet at an angle, running from the ridge down toward a corner rather than straight down like a valley does. A contractor or inspector uses these words as shorthand for exactly where on the roof something is happening, so knowing them turns a vague description into a specific location.

What is a roof valley, and why does it leak more than anywhere else?

A valley is the internal angle where two roof slopes meet and drain toward each other, shaped roughly like a V when you look at it from above. Every drop of water that lands on either of those two slopes funnels into that one line, so a valley carries far more volume than any other part of the roof, which is exactly why it is the most common place for a leak to start. There are two ways to build one. A closed valley weaves shingles from both slopes across it so no metal shows. An open valley runs an exposed metal channel down the middle with shingles cut back on either side, which sheds heavy water and debris a little more reliably. Either method depends on getting the underlayment and flashing underneath right, and that part is never visible once the shingles are on. What do the fascia and soffit do?

The fascia is the vertical board that caps the ends of the rafters at the eave and gives the gutter something to mount to. The soffit is the panel underneath it, covering the underside of the overhang, and on most homes it does double duty as intake ventilation. Vented soffit panels are drilled or slotted to let outside air into the attic, which is the intake half of the roof’s ventilation system. If the soffit is solid, painted over, or blocked by insulation, that intake never happens no matter how good the exhaust venting at the ridge is.

What is a drip edge, and why does an estimate without one matter?

A drip edge is a narrow metal strip installed along the eaves and rakes, set under the underlayment at the eave and over it at the rake, that directs water off the roof and away from the fascia and the edge of the deck instead of letting it curl back underneath. Without it, water can wick back under the shingles at the edge and slowly rot the fascia and the edge of the sheathing, damage that will not show up for a season or two. It is a small amount of material and quick to install, so a written estimate that leaves it off is worth asking about directly rather than assuming it was included.

What is underlayment, and what does the ice and water barrier at the eaves do?

Underlayment is the water-resistant layer installed across the whole deck before the shingles go on, acting as the roof’s backup barrier if wind-driven rain or ice gets past the shingles above it. At the eaves, Minnesota’s code requires a stronger version of that layer: a self-adhering ice and water barrier that seals around the nails driven through it, run up from the edge to a set distance past the interior wall line. The installer works to that requirement on every replacement. This is the detail that matters most in this climate, because it is the barrier standing between an ice dam backing water up under the shingles and that water reaching your ceiling. What is flashing, and why are most roof leaks a flashing problem rather than a shingle problem?

Flashing is formed metal installed at every place the roof meets something that is not more roof: a sidewall, a chimney, a skylight curb, a dormer, or a lower roof running into a wall above it. Step flashing is the version used where a roof slope meets a vertical wall. It is a series of small L-shaped metal pieces, one per shingle course, woven in layer by layer so each piece overlaps the one below it and sheds water down and out instead of letting it work sideways into the wall. In practice, most leaks on an otherwise sound roof trace back to flashing that was reused, caulked over, or installed short, not to the shingles themselves. Shingles are a large, redundant, well-tested surface. Flashing is a set of small custom joints, and a joint is where a roof usually fails first.

What is a pipe boot, and why does it fail before the roof does?

A pipe boot is the fitting that seals around a plumbing vent pipe where it comes through the roof, usually a metal or plastic base with a rubber or thermoplastic collar that grips the pipe. That collar sits in direct sun and rides Minnesota’s full temperature swing every year, and rubber hardens and cracks with UV exposure and freeze-thaw cycling well before the shingles around it wear out. A pipe boot with a cracked collar is one of the most common sources of a slow, hard-to-place leak on a roof that otherwise looks fine, and it is a routine thing to check at every inspection.

What is a ridge vent, and how does it work with the rest of the ventilation system?

A ridge vent is a low-profile vent that runs along the ridge and lets warm, moist attic air escape. It is the exhaust half of a two-part system that only works when it is paired with intake, usually the soffit vents described above. Air has to come in low, at the soffit, and leave high, at the ridge, for the attic to actually flush. A ridge vent installed over an attic with no working soffit intake mostly just pulls air from whatever opening it can find, which is often not the soffit at all. What are the starter course and the ridge cap?

The starter course is the first row of roofing material installed at the eave, turned so its adhesive strip and thicker edge sit under the first visible course, sealing the most vulnerable edge of the roof against wind and water. The ridge cap is the equivalent piece at the top: individual cap shingles bent over the ridge to cover the seam where the two slopes and the ridge vent meet. Both are easy to shortcut because neither is very visible once the job is finished, and both are exactly where a roof is most exposed to wind uplift.

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square is the unit the whole trade measures in: 100 square feet of roof surface, and it is what shows up on your estimate as the line-item count for materials, labor and disposal. Reading an estimate with these parts in mind

An estimate that only lists shingles is not really a full roof estimate. Deck repair, ice and water barrier, drip edge, flashing at every wall and penetration, pipe boots, ventilation, the starter course and the ridge cap are each their own line, or should be, and each one is a place where two contractors bidding the same job can quietly differ. Checking that two quotes cover the same list of parts, not just the same brand of shingle, is how you compare them honestly.
