An insert replacement, sometimes called a pocket replacement, is a new window unit built to fit inside the existing frame that is already anchored in the wall. The old sashes come out, the new frame slides into the opening that remains, and the original interior and exterior trim stays in place. Because nothing outside the window opening itself gets disturbed, the job is faster and less invasive than tearing a window out to the studs. The tradeoff is a small loss of glass area, since the new unit’s frame sits inside the old one, and the fact that anything already wrong with the original frame, sill, or the wall behind it stays wrong. An insert does not touch what it cannot see.
What a full-frame replacement is
A full-frame replacement takes the window out entirely, down to the rough opening framed in the wall. The old frame, sill, and often the interior and exterior trim come out with it.
